Horizon

Horizons

With this series of necklaces, I drew on the cardinal points of a compass: north, east, south and west. Each necklace is a horizon from a prominent natural landmark within Canberra (Australia) such as Mount Ainslie, Black Mountain and Mount Stromolo. These necklaces refer to my continuous use of the mountains to know where I am in Canberra. When I was young I lived at the foothill of Black Mountain. As long as the mountain rose up to obscure the horizon behind, I knew which way was home.

I have utilised reclaimed timber from the Canberra region to anchor the pieces to this place. I wanted to show the necklaces potential to directly reference the horizon line when the necklaces are not worn. When they are worn the horizon mapping is a mere detail of the object.
